This is really disappointing to see and hear. I saw tweets to this effect last night, that Maher had bad mouthed #OWS, and now I heard it on this video (and read the transcript) ….Just as Bill tends to get a bit cyncial and testy about religion, he’s going to say what he thinks at just about any moment.
Wes Moore stepped up to tell the panel what is obvious to anybody who has talked to core #OWS people. The people throwing chairs through Starbucks windows are not core Occupy people. Non Violence IS a core #OWS value. Right up there with the political aims of the movement.
Bill has little patience for the kind of behavior he is denoucning here, albeit mistakingly lumping those actions with OWS. In fact, it has come out in recent weeks that #BlacBloc t6actics are being employed by people who are posing as particpants, when what they are really doing is co-opting a key value of the movement, and therefore NOT OCCUPY. They are hurting the movement. And of course, the Media lap it up.
Bill should know better than to say “well you know, the Occupiers you see on TV”. Bill? Seriously? On TV? On the mainstream media? Come now.
I can identify with Bill in one sense. I am proiterctive of the church against the kind of stereotyping and straw dog religious people Bill constantly derides. Many of the “religious nutbaggery” Bill derides embarass me. And I laugh at the absurdity of it. But I also know that this is NOT what defines religious people.
