With all the theological “specialties” that the various denominations and certain Christian communities emphasize, it seems the time has come for churches to call themselves “EcoTheological” Communities/Churches. I see “Bible-centered” all the time; I see “justice” centered, so why not “Eco-centered”. Why not the VERY BIBLICAL message of the close and dependent relationship of creature to creation? Why not catch a clue from the eco-centered, earth-grounded inclinations of the apocalyptic writings of the Bible (probably THE most prevalent literary form in our Bible)? Why not? It is certainly a crucial narrative that we have allowed to get submerged in what William Catton calls an “age of exuberance” where there are NO LIMITS. Nature is telling us now, and has been for at least a couple of centuries, that there ARE INDEED LIMITS. This is our Tower of Babel, this “age of exuberance” (a term from William R. Catton’s Overshoot: The Ecological Basis of Revolutionary Change). We need a “Revival” of focus on the story of the Tower of Babel, for the sake of our ecology and its dependent economy. And for the sake of our souls, as creatures of the earth, for without nature we are without grounding. And if you say “Isnt our grounding in God?” Yes. But that’s the same answer, since God has grounded us to him/her IN NATURE, THROUGH NATURE, and OUT OF NATURE.
