Just assume it’s going to go public? #facebook #privacy

I hear people say re: Facebook ,  You have to assume that whatever you say is EVENTUALLY going to become public”.  Doesn’t that cannibalize the original allure of Facebook itself?  Much of what is on Facebook for many folks was done “in the company of”  or assuming the “restriction to those friends I have chosen”,  and would NOT have been put there if that approach is to become our standard Facebook behavior or forethought.

Think of this as an analogy:  Would we share what we do in church or in a small group if we were assuming that this would eventually make its way to the public?  And no,  Facebook is NOT the church,  but churches ,  I would imagine,  HAVE used and promoted Facebook pages as a way to “share” and “connect”.  Now are we “contracting out”  the privacy of church conversations to a company that does not see itself as accountable for changing the rules;  for shifting the status of what we posted originally under and amongst a certain sub-group’s “invited” and “accepted” friends,  and now it becomes public?  There’s something wrong with that.
