I hear people say re: Facebook , You have to assume that whatever you say is EVENTUALLY going to become publicâ€. Doesn’t that cannibalize the original allure of Facebook itself? Much of what is on Facebook for many folks was done “in the company of†or assuming the “restriction to those friends I have chosenâ€, and would NOT have been put there if that approach is to become our standard Facebook behavior or forethought.
Think of this as an analogy: Would we share what we do in church or in a small group if we were assuming that this would eventually make its way to the public? And no, Facebook is NOT the church, but churches , I would imagine, HAVE used and promoted Facebook pages as a way to “share†and “connectâ€. Now are we “contracting out†the privacy of church conversations to a company that does not see itself as accountable for changing the rules; for shifting the status of what we posted originally under and amongst a certain sub-group’s “invited†and “accepted†friends, and now it becomes public? There’s something wrong with that.
