If you aren’t TEMPTED to DESPAIR, you’re not AWARE

I’ve spent the last 15 months noticing how SO VERY FEW people are willing to even comment on the Climate Crisis. Of course, the reasons are “legion”. From outright ideological denial (as a part of a “package” of right wing paranoia about the government and the media) , to an unconscious refusal to take the time and open the self to “let it in” so that the level of crisis becomes real and motivating (if not downright panic-inducing, which is what we musty avoid when the awareness sets in). I remember one of Michael Dowd ‘s interviews in his amazing The Future is Calling Us To Greatness series, with Brian McLaren (whose post about the series is what alerted me to its existence, to which I am so grateful. Brian has been a major formative force in my coming to an ecotheological awareness of significant magnitude in my life since reading Naomi Klein’s This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs The Climate (actually, since before that, since my reaction to Naomi’s book was made possible by the ecotheological awareness Brian had been writing and speaking about for years prior). I immediately went to the bibliographies of some of Brians’s books to seek theological reflection on the Ecological Crisis we face AS A CHURCH and as GOD’s PEOPLE who are called to PROCLAIM AND LIVE THE KINGDOM OF GOD. Anyway, in that interview, Brian said “If you aren’t TEMPTED to despair about the Climate Crisis, you aren’t aware of the problem. And if you GIVE IN to DESPAIR, you’re a PART of the problem”. That says it SO WELL. .
