When is two runs “out of the game”?

The writing we get from some “Sports” sites often baffles me.  For instance,  on MLB.com ‘s account of the Reds Cardinals game:

Instead, the home team came back. Colby Rasmus led off the bottom of the fifth with a double and took third on Yadier Molina’s fly ball to right. Rasmus scored on Pedro Feliz’s ground ball, and the Cards were back in the game.

The score before this series of plays was 2-0,  after , 2-1.   Me thinks it was a game already.

I also like how the sports announcers talked about the Cardinals winning a big series from the Reds.  In actuality,  it seems the Cards HAD to sweep to get back in this one.  They had a net gain 1 game out of the last head to head.  Reds came in up 8,  leave up 7.  The way the Reds and Cards match up with the Cardinals big three,  Saturday’s Reds’ win pretty much sealed it in the minds of Reds fans.  It was huge to leave St. Louis still  up 7 games instead of 5. But there are games to play,  and the Reds had just come off a 4 day stretch in which they gained 4 games (from 4 games up going in to Sunday to 8 games following Wednesday’s game),  so anything can happen.  The Reds go to Colorado for 4,  while the Cards go to Milwaukee for 3.  After that,  The Reds come home for Pittsburgh for 3,  and the Cards go to Atlanta for 4.  No big apparent advantage for either club.
