The Prophetic Voice

Consider this bit of “angry rant”:

How blessed will be the one who seizes and dashes your little ones Against the rock.

Pretty unnerving, huh?  Vile!  Disgusting!  The author?  The Psalmist in Psalm 137 (verse 9) ,  the same one who wrote :

By the rivers of Babylon,  There we sat down and wept,  When we remembered Zion.  (137:1)

Think we might be misunderstanding Biblical rhetoric and apocalyptic language?  I think so.  Think of all the churches that “teach this trash” to their children.  Encourage them to read the Bible for themselves,  and all.  All those “Bible believers” who believe “every word of it”.

My point should be obvious here.  There is indeed harsh, over-bearing apocalyptic expression by revered Biblical writers.  If we can seek to understand the Psalmist without condemning him (by toning down or filtering out those kind of messages,  and subsuming them under a larger message of redemption,  can we not seek to understand any other human’s attempts (Rev. Wright’s apocalyptic rants/expressions) to fathom the almighty’s purposes or to understand or view the events of history?
