reading yourself interpreting the Bible

Indeed. Ironic that those most unconscious of this are those most strongly insisting that “this is what God says in His Word”. They insist that “they have no choice” but to obey “His Word”, all the while being unable to distinguish “reading one’s self interpreting the Bible” from “The Word”.

Duke McCall’s words in his sermon in chapel at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in the fall of 1980, before a “packed house” (because it was one of the last sermons preached in the “Heart of America Bible Conference” that brought together most of the big “Baptist Preachers” of the 70’s and early 80’s, who were there to “Save the Bible” from the liberals like McCall) :

“God forbid that we confuse God’s Word with our appropriation of it”
