#Chomsky on The Future of Occupy #occupytheology #occupyChurch

Noam Chomsky has long been our master of the method of American propaganda.   His warnings and insights on how the U.S. powers that be “Manufacture Consent” have made him,  in my eyes,  a theologian of sorts.  His insights help us to understand,  first hand,   the concept of “the way of the world” vs that of the Kingdom of God (Chomsky doesn’t describe for us the latter of course,  but his insights which help us to identify the messages of “maufacturing consent”  give us insight into the former.

The Occupy movement’s repression, which Chomsky decried, has a saving grace, he said: the opportunity for it to expand more into “the 99 percent” by engaging people “face to face.”

Now here,  the “face to face” is ceretainly a strength of the movement.  I also would add that the online extensions of this movement do allow us to “get a taste” of the conversations happening there,  and allowing many of us to participate (although it is certainly MUCH better if we also include the “in person” experience– becuase as I highlighted in a previous post today,  the “ambiance” is powerful; and mportant and energizing. I think it is in this matter that Occupy and thew church share a common dillema where it comes to virtual vs FTF (face to face).

An angry and frustrated population, as exists now in this country, provides “a combustible mix”

This is true. This is important.  This is the seeds of awakening.  And as in other political awakenings in U.S. history,  the church finds itself coming out and finding its social justice prophetic juices.
