I have begun the process of moving to WinHost with my blog here at wp.theoblogical.org. The only thing I don’t like is that they don’t do subdomain pointing to subdirectories. It has to be done through things like URL Rewrite,. which doesn’t make it possible to mask the directory (here , in the case of my blog, it’s now in the URL. I had to change some URLs in the WordPress database to make it work. I am having to look into URL rewrite rules or other means to see if I can keep the wordpress (or any other application, like drupal) out of the URL.
Their support seems pretty responsive, and is a breath of fresh air compared to the dismal support webhost4life now exhibits. Webhost4life was great since the fall of 2002 when I first started hosting my stuff there. Since around March, site uptime is horrible, slow, and when I needed to make changes, FTP was a nightmare.
If anybody knows how I can do something like what subdomain pointing to subdirs, let me know. In webhost4life, all I had to do, after creating the subdomain, was to point it at a location, and so wp.theoblogical.org was running under my account at the directory /wp222. All the URLs were like http://wp.theoblogical.org/?p=6224 but now it has to be http://wp.theoblogical.org/wp222/?p=6224. I had to do some mySQL to change a bunch of paths in WordPress to fix that.
But tests I ran for speed in a side by side comparison showed WinHost to be twice as fast in loading links to my blog.
