Joho the Blog: Networked truth

I think this is true,  when keeping in mind that “networks” are not only electronic networks,  but more importantly,  communities that are real enfleshed, supportive communities.  The second paragraph seems to be a quote from Heraclitus,  and David was going with the flow of his post (perhaps even meant to cite that,  but forgot,  which is something I’ve done before…plus David did say he was a bit doped up on dramamine ….but it was a fitting and wonderful quote)

For all but the most mundane of truths, the network of conversations gives us more shades, nuances, and reasons to believe. Which leads me to think that if truth isn’t an emergent property of networks, then understanding is.

It is, of course, an unowned, self-contradictory, unsettled truth that is too big to be contained by any individual. It is outside of us and among us. It is gained not by trying to contain it but by traveling through it.

This seems very “theological” to me (or at least, applicable and useful to theology) ,  and a fitting description of the the sociological truth of church,  which is made possible and given life by the very Spirit of God that brought it into being.  Hauerwas would say that it is this “Network” that allows us to be able to recognize and celebrate truth in the first place.
