UN Resolution, Israeli rushes to do last minute “clean up”

Can someone tell me what the hell this means? Notice the words that I bolded:

Jerusalem — A hard-fought UN resolution calling for an immediate cessation of violence in southern Lebanon has been endorsed by both Israeli and Lebanese leaders, opening the door to the cessation of fighting as early as tomorrow.

Just what good does the word “immediate” do if it merely “opens the door” to cessation “as early as tomorrow”? And also, knowing this, the Israeli’s respond by continuing to carry out the offensives as if they might be trying to “gain some ground” or “hurry up and finish up”:

“Nothing that we’ve done today precludes a diplomatic solution, far from it. We are following events in New York very closely,” Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Mark Regev said earlier yesterday. He said Israel’s top priorities are disarming Hezbollah and getting it out of the south for good.

“What we’re doing today could augment diplomacy,” he said. “We’re making the objective easier for the international forces and the Lebanese army when they get there.”

No, Regev, the world community is attempting to do this for you, since you show no inclinaiton to be “human” about this. You see, you are not to be trusted. You’ve proven this. That’s why the U.N. has gotten involved. (note: I remain also cautious about the role of the U.S. and what sorts of pressures they are applying in weakening the UN draft and seeking adavatages or “outs” for the Israelis. But regardless, the Israelis have full knowledge of the intent of all this, and they continue anyway. I call this war crimes of an “in your face” nature)

Juan Cole expresses his disgust:

The Israeli officer corps is apparently furious that the UN is now calling for a ceasefire of sorts, before they could accomplish their military goals. Gee, that is the problem with ceasefires, isn’t it? Get in the way of further warmaking, if you pay attention to them.
