Tired of Trying to Change the Old

Pastor Draven quotes from the closing chapter of Kelly Bryson’s book, Don’t Be Nice, Be Real,

A Jewish God-fearer in a room full of Christians: A choice: to deconstruct or to building anew

Lately I too have had much more passion for creating a new partnership culture and community for myself, my family and my close friends, rather than trying to change the old culture. I think there is a line in the Bible that says, “Don’t put new wine into old wineskins.”

This is very much in keeping with what the “Hauerwasian” message is. It’s much more important to BE the Church than to worry about who’s not BEING it. In fact, it’s very likely that this is the only way to change anybody’s mind about their life. They have to see how it works. This has been the modus operandi for the Church of the Saviour for years. Not that they have an evangelistic “goal” in mind. Their “goal” is to be faithful. Their goal is to find themselves finally as participants in the Kingdom. The health and depth of their community is what “proves” the efficacy and truthfulness of their living the call.

A friend of mine from college is currently studying under Hauerwas at Duke. He says that Hauerwas is definitely not a “people pleaser”, but that he definitely has his head on straight, though.
