Christian Church and Empire

High Stakes For Church and State, Sojourners Magazine/November 2004

Christianity has always been uneasy with empire, and American empire is no exception.

I have the intention of either purchasing or renting “Bonhoeffer” on DVD, so that I can look at it regarding the issue of “The Confessing Church”. Bonhoeffer, as you probably know, embodied for the Christian Church in Germany during the Nazi era, the “Confessing Church” movement; standing up and speaking out against the regime. Our Church in America has been woefully absent in lifting this voice. UNited Methodist Bishops have spoken out but very few pastors are willing to challenge their congregations to dialogue on this issue, much less to question the Bush administration on its “Christian principles”.
