Hi… I am suffering from the EXACT same problem as you down to the steps of process…. see I tried to help out a colleague with his pavilion a530n, but after upgrading it to pro it’s having problem detecting the same things you’ve experienced..
ethernet card, sound card, and SM Bus Controller
I cannot find the driver for those things anywhere on the computer and it’s driving me crazy.
and then I found your site.
if, it’s not too much to ask, would you be so kind to send me a copy of those drivers if you still have them? I’d really appreciate it… thank you thank you thank you! (most importantly, sound driver and ethernet..)
Responded in private email…..sent the link I used, which is from nVidia:
http://download.nvidia.com/Windows/nForce/4.24/NVIDIAWindows2000XPnForceDrivers.exe
This is the motherboard that is in the a530n (nVidia nForce 3)….the download above includes the Ethernet driver, Audio, and USB (I installed the Ethernet by itself first…it gives the option of which drivers to install for the chipset……since running it all the first time prompted me to install the DirectX9 from Microsoft, and gave the link……since I needed by Ethernet to do so, I installed the Ethernet Only first, then downloaded all critical updates (including XP SP1), then installed the separate nVidia GeForce FX 5200 driver (which I also had downloaded), then re-ran the NVIDIAWindows2000XPnForceDrivers.exe
and installed the others (minus the IDE — I read about a few problems with those, and seeing how the HP system didn’t want me installing the XP Pro upgrade, I decided not to put to the test that there may be other “wierd” quirks with this system……
