Clean XP Install: NAV 2004?

I just completed a clean XP Pro install Sunday night. I am hesitating to install NAV 2004. My system before had become monstrously slow. I had a lot more things on it, and a slower boot drive (the original hard drive on my e-machines machine; 5400 rpm I expect, since it was always identified as too slow to capture video by my Pinnacle Studio DV capture card). The new drive is a WD 160gb 7200rpm and 2mb cache. With just XP Pro, Office 2003, and my Macromedia Studio Studio MX 2004, it is much healthier. Anybody got any advice on NAV 2004? Can one install 2002 or 2003 and use the key for 2004 so the update subscription is up to date?

If there is a good doc or list of things one can do to keep NAV from slowing things down so much, that’d be great. I found one on the Macromedia site about turning off AutoProtect for the Program Files\Macromedia directory to keep it from slowing up Dreamweaver, Flash, and Fireworks. Would this be advisable for Office too (if I keep all my data in other places like myDocs and a dedicated mailFiles folder)?

With Microsoft Office and especially Outlook or Internet Explorer, I would definitely install some sort of virus protection.

Not everyone needs a virus scanner, though.  My sisters are using a Pentium 100 with Windows ’95 that I configured.  They use K-Meleon for a browser, Eudora for email, and Open Office for word processing.  I have plugged all the known security holes, and their email/browser are not vulnerable to any of the recent viruses.

Of course, those not using Microsoft solutions are generally immune to viruses.  This has been the boast of macheads and penguins for years.
