Overthrow

Overthrow: America\'s Century of Regime Change from Hawaii to IraqThere is much more I want to blog about this book…..I’m almost done with it, and it has quite a few things which get me into a theo-political blogging mood. There were some comments of the author about John Foster Dulles, who was a man author Kinzer describes as “a man of profound faith”…..and yet the way he describes Dulle’s complete disregard for the effects of his U.S. international policies upon others, I have a bit of bone to pick on that one. More like a “profoundly compromised” and “thoroughly pop faith”  is more like it.  This is a great read, and it would be “enjoyable” if not for how infuriating it is to know even more of this stuff that was first brought home to me by Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States. James Carroll’s House of War is also one I will continue to refer back to, and the horrific ideas of “defense strategy” in the years following the first use of the A-bomb. These guys “in charge” of this had some really scary ideas of what constitutes legitmate use of the bomb (as if there is such a thing as “legitmate” where the A-bomb is concerned, and particularly for the H-bomb, which is all the more powerful.) After reading my 3rd “political” book of the summer, The One Percent Doctrine by Ron Suskind, the likes of Cheney makes the spectre of the nuclear threat all the more prominent.

I plan to scan and quote some portions as soon as I can get some time at work to use the scanner and do some OCR.
