BadaBIng! CBS runs segment on Bush Guard Duty

I was satisfied, even a bit enthused with the damage (one would think) to Bush done by the CBS 60-minute segment tonight. I’ve seen conservatives sneer “60 minutes?” as if they are an automatic dismissal, since they do “exposes”, they must be “liberal” or something. THis was Dan Rather , though. I loved it. Josh Marshall thought it was “restrained” somehow, so I’ll be interested in what he thought was left out.

I didn’t see the 60 Minutes II piece tonight, but I read this earlier today which makes me wonder why this story keeps getting legs.

    Here’s an excerpt:

The records indicate that, despite his move to Alabama, Bush met his obligation to the Guard in the 1972-73 year. At that time, Guardsmen were awarded points based on the days they reported for duty each year. They were given 15 points just for being in the Guard, and were then required to accumulate a total of 50 points to satisfy the annual requirement. In his first four years of service, Bush piled up lots of points; he earned 253 points in his first year, 340 in his second, 137 in his third, and 112 in his fourth. For the year from May 1972 to May 1973, records show Bush earned 56 points, a much smaller total, but more than the minimum requirement (his service was measured on a May-to-May basis because he first joined the Guard in that month in 1968).

    Gary,

It got legs because there was NEW evidence.

National Review? Swift Boat ads all over the place? These guys were discredited by the offical US records.

The story is based on New documents, before that article was ever written. Bush’s commanding officer recommended he be discharged for failure to achieve standards….he also documented pressure he received to “sugar-coat” Bush’s performance (like National review wants to do). Give me 60 minutes ANYDAY over National Review. You don’t thknk National review has motivation to also “sugar coat”? If they continue to hawk SBVT’s book, they aren’t worth listening to.
