Bill Moyers is incorrect when he says, “God plays favorites and chooses Abel’s offering over Cain.” Deuteronomy 10:17 (NIV) says, “For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes.” God does not play favorites. The Genesis account does not detail what standard God was expecting Cain and Abel to meet with their sacrifices, but you can be sure that both were held to the same standard.
That he places God’s favoritism at the heart of man’s sinfulness shows a lack of understanding of James 1:13–14 (NIV): “When tempted, no one should say, ‘God is tempting me.’ For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed.”
Hardly the point of Molyer’s story, though. It was a quick pass through that story, and clearly, Moyers meant merely to emphasize that God CHOSE Abel’s gift, for whatever reason….and the point was that Cain was incensed and that this was a religious squabble.
