Mistaking “God’s Word” with our appropriation of it: The UMC fundamentalist takeover

I posted thoughts yesterday about how this UMC schism is like a replay of the Southern Baptist fundamentalist takeover I also experienced, which was about to explode into reality when I was in Seminary at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. (M. Div. 1978-81). My “Church History II” professor, Bill J. Leonard, soon (or in about 10 years) to be Dean at Wake Forest Divinity School, wrote a book about that Southern Baptist “Battle for the Bible”: , “God’s Last and Only Hope: The Fragmentation of the Southern Baptist Convention (1990) “. And now I see my present denomination falling into the same theological fragmentation,  and taking what seems to be an official “vote” on this yesterday at the Special General Conference in St. Louis.
