Holy Cow. These conversations drive me nuts. Resa Aslan, the Muslim, makes the most sense here. Maher is Christo-phobic. The lady from Fox is sickeningly condescending (which really drives Maher nuts—I’m not too fond of it either, nor are Whitford or Aslan, I would imagine) . Whitford is the “Progressive”, but shows no indication of being overtly Christian. Aslan counters Maher’s “Religion is dangerous” argument with “people are dangerous” (which I tend to agree with).. Aslan also points out that people can make God say whatever they want him to say. The Fox lady appeals to “God speaks through his Word”, which is often code for “and exactly WHAT God says we will tell you forthwith”. This is where Aslan warns that God can be USED
to buttress ANY ideology. And BUTRESS they do. This conversation needs two more voices, at the least. It needs a CHRISTIAN progressive (like Jim Wallis) and needs an ecclesiologically centered “Radically Orthodox” voice (like Stanley Hauerwas). The latter would provide the voice to counter the idea that there is this “natural revelation” of “reason” to “mediate” between the religious and non-religious (as if THESE are the people — the “reasonable” people who alone can “be objective” — which seems to be the aura of both Maher AND Whitford. ) Wallis would provide a more nuanced view of “ideological use” of religion and the recognition of “nationalistic” syncreties of both sides.
