I just posted this comment under a post* on the United Methodist News Service Facebook page describing actions taken in flood relief in Louisiana :
I think we need “hands and feet” on the causes of this acceleration of occurrence of these type disasters, and occurrences that are also accelerating in their intensity. These are yet more warning signs of the effects of global warming, and they are arriving much sooner than expected. It’s well past time the churches and their leadership begin to realize that we simply cannot continue on with business as usual (meaning “We live in a very different world now, one which is experiencing dramatic and unprecedented ecological imbalance, and this has been caused by the human race’s addiction to fossil fuels, compounded by its use of the same in developing agriculture beyond its limits, and cutting down massive amounts of carbon sinks in forests and plant life, and extracting far more water from every available source that the system can replenish). We’re in deep trouble folks, and it is an ethical oversight of drastic spiritual failure. Future generations are going to be asking of us: “What on earth were you thinking? You had the science laid before you, and it continued to tell you of accelerating dangers upon dangers. How much do we need to see happen before we consider this a matter of urgency?
