The previous post about the “Climate CRISIS denial of the left” is closely related to why I have been so insistent in my opposition to the widespread capitulation of those on the left to the “lesser of two evils” fallacy. Hillary Clinton embodies in both her past performance and present “claims” and “plans” that she just doesn’t get it. She is holding fast to her “incrementalism”, which is a non-starter for the Climate Crisis (or, literally, the opposite of that; more like an “accelerant” of the processes underway).
If we think that the consequences of a Trump presidency would be disastrous (and I do believe they would be, in many ways), to continue to kick the can down the road on Climate is going to be much worse, and actually cause more of the “response” to chaos already contributing to massive immigration (like extreme racism and yet deeper austerity measures, inflaming yet more frustration and anger, leading to yet more unrest and violence).
Not even to mention, as this happens, the eco-system descends into yet further breakdown, unleashing increasingly intense domino effects. We’ve ALREADY “locked in” certain sure consequences (not “sure” in terms of “how bad” or “specific effects”, since what we are facing is ENTIRELY unprecedented), but “locked in” consequences, WHATEVER they turn out to be, WILL happen.
Whatever we do now toward “turning back” will not stop them. It will only “help” us to avoid piling on yet further damage, and we simply DON’T KNOW if we’ve already crossed a point of no return. All we can do now is react in sheer HOPE of survival; part of that hope being that it’s “never too late” to simply do the right thing for the sake of the true common good.
